y colleagues and I have developed a grid generation strategy for the sphere which results in superior uniform grids and especially variable resolution grids that feature smooth transitions from coarsely to finely refined regions. The latter are useful for regional forecasting applications. Or technology is also useful for variable resolution ice sheet and ocean simulations, especially regional ones. Our meshing technology is an integral part of the new climate system model being developed by US Department of Energy laboratories. Additional work in the environmental sciences includes discretization schemes for ocean and ice-sheet applications and for subsurface flows, especially in the setting of karst aquifers.
